I live on a corner in a residential area where my side street has become very busy and gotten a lot more foot traffic in recent years. It’s a sixty-year-old house that’s been in my family for three generations now, and I just moved back to live in it after a long time in another city. The neighborhood is changing. I don’t welcome the change, but love my house, and don’t want to move. I just want to feel safer. My family room, where the kids and I spend most of our time, has two large windows, and passers-by on the sidewalk are literally only about eight feet from them. It can get loud as well as unnerving, since most of the people walking along this route seem to be either rowdy teens or homeless men with serious mental health issues who talk loudly to themselves. In the past month, there were several shooting incidents near my intersection, involving some teens from another part of town. The police dealt with it swiftly, but it’s left me feeling I should safeguard my windows. How??
BTW, the house is solid brick over extra-thick framed walls. And the neighborhood is not bad. The recent rash was an isolated event that the police squashed, and the only thing that’s happened like that here ever. Those involved don’t live anywhere near here, and the family they were visiting a street over moved out of state two weeks ago. But I’m just super cautious, and don’t like people that close to my window for any reason, even though the house is elevated by a half-story and the side yard bounded by a low stone wall. Erecting a chain-link fence would be pointless, and a solid barrier would only serve to give someone a place to be hidden.

If i lived any where I was afraid for my kids I would move to some where, a lot safer …Pronto
