What's the music that shaped your generation?
Any generation or genre is welcome here, rock, metal, rap, hip-hop, techno, pop, r&b, concious, soul, dub, dancehall, trance, house, electronic, etc. I wanna hear what music really had an impact on your generation or was really popular at the time.
Here’s just some tracks on my list. I tried to put a mix of different genres here.
50 Cent – In Da Club
Eminem – The Way I Am
Creed – My Sacrifice
Enrique Iglesias – Hero
Damian Marley – Welcome to Jamrock
Coldplay – Yellow
Mad Cobra – Flex
DJ Tiesto – Traffic
Metallica – Enter Sandman
Sean Paul – Temperature
I"ll just consider my generation as my high school years, 77–81. Influential bands at least with my core group of friends were:
Van Halen
Foreigner
AC/DC
Boston
Journey
Fleetwood Mac
Ramones
Sex Pistols
Pat Benetar
Kiss
Theres 10 of em. Not many great shakes perhaps, but they were certainly a soundtrack to my time.
Very nice question !
I’m a metal, rock person myself so here we go, the bands that pretty much shaped me and my friends
Iron Maiden
Manowar
Motorhead
Ac/Dc
Helloween
Gamma Ray
Metallica
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
you know what… just check out my Last.fm http://www.last.fm/user/HMetal_days

I was a lucky teenager. The 60′s were my teenage years. The world can never be that good again. We had the Beatles, The Stones, the women got the pill (so we got more women) and nobody had ever heard of herpes or aids, can’t ever be that good again. The 60′s, especially mid 66 to the end of 68 was the most prolific time ever known for new and diverse original music. It was the summer of love and, even with all that going on there was the profound influence of Motown music. I have a very wide taste in music and it all comes from a musical education in the 60′s.

Yes, the 60s were amazing. Medgar Evers was killed by a KKK member, John F. Kennedy & Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered, and Malcom X was killed as well. 55,000 Americans were killed in the Vietnam war, African Americans seeking equality were met with violence. There was a large increase in crime and many riots broke out. The pill was invented, but had risks – in fact, nowadays birth control pills contain a dose of estrogen that is 1/3 less than when they were first marketed, among other things.
Lovely.
Each decade has its own pros and cons. A person who might remember growing up in a warm home with friendly neighbors isn’t going to recognize it as a bad time – and a person who grew up in poverty, unloved, beaten and discriminated against isn’t going to recognize it as a happy time.
I also highly disagree with the statement that the late 60s were the most diverse time for music, but whatever, not going to get into an argument over that.
Sorry for the side tangent, but stuff like that always bothers me. I especially get annoyed when people say "I wish I lived in the ##s, the music was so much better then!". The type of music that was popular during a certain era should be among the LAST thing on your mind when choosing a decade to live in.
Now, on to the question. I thought you meant what was the music that shaped the music in my generation now, but I guess you mean what’s the music that was popular during my generation. Because honestly, there are far too many different types of music out there nowadays to be able to say "Here’s a list of bands that defined my generation", you know? Pop, hip hop, and rock are quite popular here, especially when mixed with electronica.
Great question, thanks!
